Intern Chronicles

5/12/13

So I just finished my first week as an intern and i must say it's the first time I enjoy waking up early. Although, if it wasn't for finals I could have started in time for Derby, which was a bummer. But it's still pretty fun hanging out with the crew in the morning. I even got to go on the air already!...for like a total of 15 seconds but it's all good! I was definitely nervous but I just treated it as a regular conversation with Ben and Kelly and was fine.
I already got to meet a celebrity too. The one and only Ed Sheeran! Not only did I meet him but he even played a private acoustic session for us! He was such a cool guy.
I learned and experienced a lot just in this first week. Trial by fire I guess! I'm really looking forward to what's in store later though. I'll keep you guys posted on how this is the best experience ever.

Ashley’s first week as an intern:

Most people would imagine first day as an intern would consist of filling out paperwork and getting coffee for whoever they are interning for. My first day was the complete opposite! Talk about a dream come true on the first day!

I woke up worried I was going to be late for the first day. I was the complete opposite; I was 30 minutes early! I was greeted with delicious food and taken straight to the studio! I was not expected for all this.

We then go to a meeting that is held every week so I got to meet everyone else that works at 99.7. Pretty cool! Learning what makes the station Kentuckiana function. Little did I know this was only the start of the day. It gets better.

Of course you have to your “down time” moments. Well these moments consisted of looking for material for the next day’s morning show. This means being online looking up those juicy details about those celebs we love. Awesome! But wait, the best is yet to come.

The best part of the day, I MET ED SHEERAN! That’s right, me! First day and I am already meeting celebrities. What did you that day? I bet that beats it! Not only did I meet him, he played a private show! Wait, did you read that correctly? I assure you, you did! He is absolutely amazing in person!

I fell in love more so than I already was with him! Hold on, there’s more!!!! (I know right!) I got a signed autograph of Ed and a hug from him!!!!! AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

First day as an intern was my first week of summer. I say I kicked it off pretty well! I have the best internship ever and look forward to sharing my progress and experiences with all of you out there!

My first blog, what what!

So, Derby week was my first week as an intern at DJX! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was to wake up at 4am Monday morning. No, I'm being serious, I've never been that excited to wake up so early in my life. I had to meet Kelly at the station at 5:30am so we could be at Churchill Downs by 6am to start the morning show. Not only were the radio stations there, but the television stations were there as well. It was so awesome to see everything firsthand.
After the morning show on Oaks, Ben asked me if I wanted to attend the Unbridled Eve Gala and work the Red Carpet with Sarah. Yes, I said the Red Carpet. I think that was one of the best moments of my life! Haha!! The Unbridled Eve Gala was a BLAST! I got to meet Lance Bass, Lauren Conrad (whom I LOVEEEEE), and Luke Bryan! After the Red Carpet, we went into the gala and ate this super fancy four course meal. I felt a little important I'm not even going to lie. I could definitely do that every weekend!

This week I've gotten to see how the morning show is actually done in studio. I've learned a lot in this weeks span and I can't wait to learn MORE! Today, Ben let me work the board. Um, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. My heart was pounding!!!!! THANKFULLY, I didn't screw up. GO ME! Anyways, that's it for my first blog! I will keep you ladies and gentlemen posted on how AWESOME my internship is!

Today is my last blog and day as an intern at WDJX:( I have learned so much on how to execute a daily show, edit the show, and what take place in the daily lives of Ben, Kelly, and many other workers at Mainline. I can not thank Ben and Kelly enough for allowing me this awesome opportunity. I would highly recommend anyone interested in radio to do an internship with them! I am sure going to miss Ben's burps, Kelly's sailor mouth, Alex's crazy personality, and Sarah's cute little baby belly:) I am now going to cry in the corner of the studio because I am so sad!! Well..good luck to all future interns and keep it real homies.

Here are some tips for future interns

If Ben, Kelly, and Alex ever ask you to go to Starbucks or have "craft time" with the scissors say NO. You will fail at your job every time...well at least I did anyway! Another tip is you need to find a way to dress for both extremely cold or extremely hot temperatures. The studio is bipolar and you are either going to freeze your butt off or have a heat stroke. There is no happy medium with the temperature in that place lol. Next, you need to start working the corners now to pay for your parking. That or ride your Huffy every time you come. Another useful tip is to NEVER bring up cheese around Alex, she may want to punch you in the face. I could go on and on for days but the last thing interns need to remember is to prepare yourself mentally for the things you may see and hear at the studio. I may be scarred for life but this internship has been worth it :) oh and how could I forget to mention... WE ARE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!! #L1C4
